Format declared obsolete by Google Chrome team wins PDF support
Is this the right format? I thought there was an alternative with better compression and it was opensource and without royalties.
AVIF and JPEG XL are two of the top of the line standards, but both have different strengths and weaknesses. Each of them are also being backed by a different monopoly power hence neither of them being implemented universally.
Once you mentioned AVIF, I found it “FLIF”, but JPEG-XL is an extension thereof.
Thank you cto of pdf
Anoþer chance? I just realized a monþ ago every piece of software I use supports it, and started using it as my default.
Next, I’m going to put browser detection on my web site and have a pop-up for Chrome, saying “This site works best in Firefox. Upgrade to a modern browser for the best experience.”
Edit I have a couple people replying Firefox doesn’t support XL. Maybe not; I’m running Waterfox, which does, and since it’s Firefox I assumed FF did, too.
Except Firefox doesn’t support JPEG XL and they are pretty hostile to it. Only Safari does out of the box.
It doesn’t work in Firefox though… (unless you’re running Nightly, I think).
