The latest massive youtube sponsor seems to be data broker removal services. As a rule of thumb is if I see the same sponsor more than 3 times it’s just a scam.
But as I’ve recently become assaulted with scam calls due to trying to find a different job the prospect of services like these seem to be more and more enticing.
What do you all think? Is actually a service?
I used deleteme for a year and I can safely say that my spam calls significantly dropped, and when I search my name data on me no longer shows up on those people websites. Would recommend
Also remove your phone number from places like LinkedIn and Facebook if you haven’t already. I got a few of job scam calls from linkdin
I would assume they do something, but I have not used any of these services myself. My feeling is they’re kinda like the tax filing software, they might be useful tools, but their whole business relies on things being unnecessarily burdensome for the average person. I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out that these companies lobby for lax regulations for data brokers, just enough for their product to be useful but not enough to put them out of business.
Overall, I feel if I freeze my credit, and occasionally google my name for data broker websites, going through the opt-out on the ones, I think that’s enough to put me above 90% of the US population, and then it’s just a numbers game of not getting scammed.
I’m in no way an authority on the subject, but RejectConvenience does a great job of examining this topic succinctly in this video.
It works in the same way that you could pay someone to clean your house. While you’re paying them they can do a bad or good job, but when you stop paying them your house will be dirty again soon.
There’s lots of them. Some are probably more legit then others.
But it’s a bit of a never ending war. You don’t “eventually win” by having the service for a while. If you lapse on using it new brokers just spin up with that data.
For phone spam specifically you might look into using a google voice number or something similar listed on your resume or used when applying. After initial contact is made you might follow up with something scheduled on your main line. Another option is spam apps on your phone.
I’ve used incogni for about a year or so and don’t receive any spam calls or email
Well, they sell you a service to accomplish a result you could easily achieve yourself by thinking for 5 seconds before acting, on an easily-forgettable subscription model, and there’s literally no way to verify that they took any actual action on your behalf or that there was ever any action that needed to be taken in the first place… Yeah, seems legit.
I don’t believe it is worth it. You’re much better off keeping your data off the Internet in the first place.
The problem is, if you employ a service like that:
-
It is a cost that returns every month.
-
What happens with your data? You have to give your data to the company so they know what to remove. Can you imagine what happens if they are hacked? Would they even tell their customers? Or just keep quite? They have everything you don’t want the Internet to know in one location, not only for you, but a lot of users. It’s a target, for sure.
For me, it’s not worth it. I keep minimal info out in public. I don’t have social media. If I Google myself, I find nothing. So why would I pay for a service that I don’t need?
Can you even see what data a service like that removes? And how often?
Now, if you know your data is on the Internet and it’s being used you may consider it. But it’s probably to late already. The people using your data already have it, and may sell it to their scamming buddies too. There’s not much a company can do about that.
