Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some common things people buy that you would never buy?
183·23 hours agoYou must buy $1600 iphone to support failing US economy.
Please don’t look at all the alternatives that are 3 years ahead in tech and 1/3rd of the cost.

6·23 hours agoThe best pourover kits in existence cost like $25 USD max too. There’s no reason to not learn how to do it right.

261·1 day ago@Cowbee has a great reading list here that goes over many of these. Any anti-imperialist historical account is going to give you a better view
Here’s a few documentaries about different leaders:
- Fidel - The untold story (Cuban Revolution)
- Malcolm X - Make it Plain
- The Upright Man (Thomas Sankara)
- Grenada - Future coming Towards Us
- Paul Robeson - Here I Stand
- Lenin - old British Documentary
- The Murder of Fred Hampton
- The Revolution will not be televised (Chavez and Venezuela)
- A place called Chiapas (EZLN)
- Loyal Citizens of Pyongyang in Seoul (서울의 평양 시민들)
- The Haircut - A North Korean Adventure
And I keep a study guide here.

5·2 days agoEvery other lemmy app I can find right aligns action dropdowns and thumbnails, we were the outlier. Pics of all those other apps were linked in my PR.
I’m making lemmy-ui match jerboa more closely from now on, so that we can have a uniform UI standard that works better on mobile.
Obligatory US troop copypasta
You see american choppers in the bright blue sky, hundreds and hundreds of screaming american soldiers drop from it, you look across the field and see the tanks rolling in. You hear a loud explosion and realise that the shrine you have protected for thousands of years with tooth and nail is destroyed by the empire, you come to the realisation that this is very probably the end of your people who’ve struggled to survive all these centuries. You realise that very soon there is going to be a river of blood of your people here; white phosphorus and depleted uranium will be shot very soon, deforming babies for decades to come, and millions of your people are gonna be killed. Your millennia old language and religion will be wiped out, you’re very likely the last of your kind.
Suddenly, an American soldier kicks you down, puts his foot on your neck and aims his standard ar-15 on the side of your head all while screaming; you realise you’re gonna die, and you won’t have to see the destruction of your community that you fostered so carefully all these centuries for.
Just before he pulls the trigger, you think to yourself, “To be fair to him, he probably had a low GPA in highschool and didnt have a health-care, those are notoriously hard to get in America”.
This thread is being targeted by a lot of no-content “correct the record” fediverse accounts, upvoting pro-genocide US democratic party and Israeli talking points. Please report them so we can ban them ASAP.
Thank you to all the posters below doing great work debunking them.

If Harris had won the 2024 election, do you honestly think she would be mass deporting immigrants without a trial, starting a trade war with China, attempt to cut funding for FEMA, etc?
Of course, look at her predecessor. Obama massively increased ICE, deportations, and did a pivot to asia.
This is a complex topic, but most marxists think that class and race aren’t extricable, but intertwined, and to try to separate them into this situation is “class struggle” and this one is “race struggle” is a false premise.
Marx also thought that he was a discoverer, not inventor of his ideas:
And now as to myself, no credit is due to me for discovering the existence of classes in modern society or the struggle between them. Long before me bourgeois historians had described the historical development of this class struggle and bourgeois economists, the economic anatomy of classes. What I did that was new was to prove: (1) that the existence of classes is only bound up with the particular, historical phases in the development of production, (2) that the class struggle necessarily leads to the dictatorship of the proletariat, (3) that this dictatorship itself only constitutes the transition to the abolition of all classes and to a classless society.
Having a US senator that was an Abu Ghraib (the US torture camp in Iraq) prison guard, seems incredibly on brand.
This is helpful. Could you make a github issue and copy-paste this there? Thx.
The post list query is by far the worst offender. It needs to filter, sort, cursor paginate, and join to many tables, and indexes are hard to follow and keep up with.
What’s more is that the problems only surface with lots of historical data, meaning we can only really test the query plans with a fully populated DB.
All this requires running lemmy locally, and inspecting the postgres query durations. We really need proper test suites (lemmy DB perf is one example) that can stress-test production data also.
Here is one historical issue:
I’d very much appreciate any help.
The way to solve the database problems isn’t to keep throwing more and more money at powerful servers and scaling. Its to fix it at the root: lemmy’s unoptimized database.
@dullbananas has done invaluable work in making our DB better (and all of these will be in
1.0), but I’m convinced that if we had even 1-2 more Postgresql experts do a pass over the DB, and ideally one full-time expert, all of these problems could be solved.

True. I have a decent hand-one for $50, but they can get pretty expensive.
